What do you learn on a beginner DJ course?

By the DJ Archie School · Updated 7 October 2026

The short answer

Our Beginner DJ Programme takes students from complete beginner to confident DJ. Students learn professional DJ equipment, cueing, song structure and phrasing, EQ, smooth transitions, track selection and how to build a set, then perform their own live graduation set. No experience is needed.

Who the beginner course is for

Anyone aged 10 or over who wants to learn to DJ properly, from children and teenagers to adults. No previous DJ experience is required. The programme is practical, hands-on and taught one-to-one at the student's own pace, at home.

What you'll learn

Professional DJ equipment

How to use a professional DJ setup, and what every control and function does: the decks or jog wheels, the mixer, the channel faders, the crossfader, gain and headphone cueing.

Cueing and preparing tracks

How to find the right point in a track, set cue points, and prepare your music so you're ready before it's time to mix.

Song structure and phrasing

How dance tracks are built from beats, bars and phrases, and why mixing at the right moment is what makes a transition sound natural. This is the skill that separates a mix from two songs playing at once.

Using EQ

How to use the high, mid and low controls to blend two tracks cleanly, so basslines don't clash and the sound stays clear.

Smooth transitions

Putting it together to move from one track to the next without the dance floor noticing the join.

Choosing music that works together

How to select tracks that flow well together, so your set feels like a journey rather than a playlist.

Building a DJ set

How to plan a well-structured set with a beginning, a build and an ending.

Timing, creativity and confidence

As the programme goes on, students develop their timing, creativity, confidence and performance skills. The mentor helps each student find their own style with the music they love, not a set list someone else chose.

The graduation set

Everything comes together at the end. Students plan and perform their own graduation set live, in front of family and friends. It's the goal the whole course builds towards, and for many students it's their first time performing.

How long it takes and what it costs

The course is 8 one-to-one lessons at your home and costs £999. See how much DJ lessons cost for what's included.

What comes after the beginner course?

Students who want to keep going move on to our Intermediate and then Advanced DJ courses, which build on the same skills with more creative techniques, reading a room and performing with confidence. Every level ends with its own live graduation set. Standout graduates may be invited to join the DJ Archie Agency for gigs and radio.
